Who is C5LA?

C5 Youth Foundation of Southern California (C5LA), is a 501(c) (3) youth organization that provides five-plus years of leadership development and mentoring to high-potential teens from at-risk environments to rise above their circumstances and guide them through successful high school graduation and enrollment into college.

C5LA was founded in 2000 as the personal philanthropy of John Alm, former President and CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises. After seeing the impact summer camp experiences had on his own children's confidence, self-esteem, and interpersonal skills, he developed a summer leadership camp for at-risk youth from inner-city Los Angeles.

C5LA is now an award winning youth organization that provides a five-plus leadership development and mentoring program to high-potential teens from at-risk environments and guides them through successful high school graduation, enrollment into college and persistence and resilience to graduate with a baccalaureate degree. C5LA has a long-standing partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) working with teachers and school administrators to identify students who meet the nominating criteria: students who have a clear financial need (no more than $10,000 in annual income per family member), have other hardships and struggles in their lives including a lack of support to finish high school and apply to and attend college (i.e. first-to-college in their family) and have the ability to handle the intensity and challenges of the multi-year, year-round program.

A strong sense of community resonates with the C5LA Leaders long after they graduate from high school and college and launch into their careers. There is a strong cohort of Alumni that continue to participate as volunteers in all aspects of the program and in the quarterly Alumni social events. In recognition that many of our early alumni are in the early stages of their professional career and to create a pipeline for future board representation from alumni, we developed the Young Executives Board (YEB) in 2016. We expect that this group of young professionals will help to broaden our reach and continue to impact each class of Leaders.
